L'amore è ciò per la cui potenza tutte le cose son generate; è in tutte le cose, vivo in ciò che è vivo, grazie a lui ciò che è vivo vive, ed è lui stesso la linfa vitale di ciò che è vivo; riscalda ciò che è freddo, illumina ciò che è oscuro, risveglia ciò che è assopito, vivifica ciò che è morto, fa percorrere la regione sovraceleste alle cose inferiori, trasportandole con divino furore; per suo compito le anime son legate ai corpi, per la sua guida sono innalzate alla contemplazione, per il suo volo si uniscono a
Dio superate le difficoltà naturali.
È lui che insegna quali cose siano nostre e quali altrui, chi siamo noi e chi gli altri; è lui a fare in modo che le altre cose siano dominate e possedute da noi, e che noi comandiamo e dominiamo le altre cose; infatti la necessità, che si fa beffe di tutto, obbedisce al solo amore.
